What Does a Car Mechanic Do?

A car mechanic, also known as an automotive technician, light vehicle technician, or engine mechanic, is a professional who services cars. They may specialize in one or more car brands, or work with any brand. Mechanics are trained to use special tools and often work in stores or garages. If you plan to be a mechanic, you have to be prepared to get your hands dirty. Vehicle inspectors review the emission levels of cars and any customizations added to vehicles and confirm that the cars comply with all required regulations.

If any repairs are needed, the inspector will check cars after repairs are completed to ensure they meet quality standards. Auto body repair technicians often interact directly with customers in their repair shop and must have strong business and customer service skills to give the customer an upfront estimate of the cost and time required to repair their vehicle. The auto electrician connects the computerized diagnostic system in the car to determine the problem and develop a plan to fix it. The plan could include rewiring the elements, replacing the light bulbs, or the entire electrical system. The mechanic may need to recalibrate an engine, rewire parts, or replace the entire component.

Car mechanics are familiar with vehicle regulations and technology systems and ensure that the vehicle is safe to operate when returned to the owner. Auto mechanics repair customers' vehicles when they are brought to the repair shop. Automotive mechanics work on everything from engines to belts, transmissions and brakes.
