How to Remove Deep Scratches from Your Car

Scratches definitely spoil the look of your car and they are an unfortunate predictability of owning an automobile. Most of the scratches only penetrate the clear coat but in the case of deep scratches, they not only penetrate the clear coat but also the colored paint. A repair will be of course done by a professional but this will be an expensive task and it’s not worth as they will charge ten times more for repairs you can easily do yourself. Luckily, most of the deep scratches can be repaired using a common compound known as rubbing compound. The compound cuts through the paint and blending it over the scratched area. To do the task in DIY style, follow the directions.

Things Needed

  • Rubbing compound
  • Lint-free cloth
  • Automotive cleaning detergent

Remove Deep Scratches

Directions

Step 1:

Park the car in a shady place away from direct sunlight and allow the car’s surface to cool down.

Step 2:

The next step is to wash the scratched area using an automotive cleaning detergent, then use a lint-free cloth to wipe the area clean.

Step 3:

Apply the rubbing compound in circle on the surface of a clean lint-free cloth. Make sure that the size of the circle is approximately about a quarter coins.

Step 4:

Start rubbing the surface of the scratched area in tight circles with the cloth and the rubbing compound.

Step 5:

Give some time to the rubbing compound to dry. When the compound turns a chalky white color, it means that it has dried.

Step 6:

Use a clean lint-free cloth to wipe off the rubbing compound from the car’s surface.

Step 7:

Repeat the process if necessary until the scratch vanishes.

Tips and Helpful Information

  • Don’t use any type of paint; make sure that the one you buying is specifically designed for use in vehicles. Besides this, it must be kept in mind that only the same color of paint should be used. If something of the same color is used but with a different shade, then this will only give a bad look to your car.
  • In case of very deep scratches, the best option is to take the car to an auto repair shop because they are best for handling extreme scratches and achieve a more desirable result.
